So, did Interview Kickstart help me achieve my goal? When you see that everybody is going through similar struggles and that it’s not just you, you don’t feel left out or demotivated. Also since there are a lot of us who are going for interviews, we discuss how everyone is doing at these interviews. In fact, we now have an IK WhatsApp group where we keep in touch and solve problems in addition to what we do at IK.

But after you join InterviewKickstart you see that you are not alone and there are a lot of people with a similar amount of experience who are going through these situations. I wondered how at this point in my career even after having an experience of 10-15 years in the industry, why can’t I still clear interviews. I think this definitely helped me improve my design skills. System design came naturally to me but what I learned at IK was the microservice approach which was pretty good especially with caching and stuff. I was a senior manager so I was mostly hands-on with design. Interview Kickstart Review - What I needed help with and how IK helpedĬoding was definitely the most important thing I needed help with. I realized that I needed to face facts and thoroughly prepare for technical interviews in order to get a good opportunity at a good company. Most people just use the libraries and get what is needed to do the work. We might do it once in two or three years but definitely not day to day. However, very few developers including me solve ones that involve graphs and trees. With 15 years of experience, I have solved many complex problems. One can always come up with something but if you have not solved 10-15 similar problems you won’t be any good. In an interview there are 35-45 mins so it’s kind of impossible to solve the problem if you have not solved something similar. In my case, I try to generalize it by thinking about how I try to solve it at work currently when the product team comes and asks any question.

One still has to code but that takes only about 20-30% of the time whereas in interviews they give you a problem and you have to immediately think and solve it. Your day to day work involves understanding the business requirements and coding accordingly. At work nobody really uses sorting or knows how it’s implemented - they just use your standard language libraries. This is the reason I joined Interview Kickstart which helped me to clear a lot of fundamentals. I realized that interview questions were complex and I struggled with them, especially solving them in the short amount of time required in interviews. I went to a few interviews without preparation and struggled because I had very limited time to come up with solutions. I realized that day-to-day coding is very different from an interview environment.
